Services & Products : Flush Tank and Haul System

Cowater’s Flush Tank and Haul (FTH) System brings low-cost water and sanitation systems to remote Alaskan Villages.  Our system, called the Flush Tank and Haul System was designed to bring quality sanitation services to homeowners, health clinics and businesses in rural Alaska.  To date more than 800 FTH systems have been installed in some 15 villages.  The villages of Nunapitchuk, Napaskiak and Mekoryuk have more than 100 installations each and are fully serviced by our system.

The Flush Tank and Haul System is a ‘miniaturized’ water and sewage system.  It includes the water and sewage haul system as well as the household installations.  Instead of using large tanker trucks to haul the water and wastewater, our system uses small vehicles like ATVs and snowmachines to pull small haul tanks mounted on trailers or sleds.  At the house the water and wastewater are stored in holding tanks.  The in-house systems emphasize low water-use fixtures, especially the toilet; which uses an average of one pint per flush.  The resulting system provides a high level of service while at the same time using technology and equipment within the capacity of small, remote communities to operate and maintain. Our objective in developing the FTH system is to help residents of small Alaskan villages to get rid of the “honeybucket” from their communities.
